The Yoga Loft Storybook: Joan Demakis

Joan, proud first-time grandmother of Gregory

Why/When/Where did you start practicing yoga?
Five or six years ago, I was looking for some form of exercise to do during the winter. I did a lot of walking in the nice weather, but didn’t really have anything I enjoyed doing in the cold months. I decided to visit The Yoga Loft, which was just down the street from me, and attend a yoga class.  Now, I can’t imagine my life without my yoga practice!  It has brought peace and calm to my every day life, both on and off my mat.

How has yoga changed/influenced your life?
I try to attend 4 or 5 classes a week, and have found instructors that I love. Their classes help me to stay in shape … mentally, physically and spiritually.

What has been your experience practicing at The Yoga Loft?
The Yoga Loft is now my home away from home.  I love everyone there, and have found a new family that always makes me feel welcomed and special.

Anything else you wish to share about your yoga journey?
After practicing for a few years, and with a little coaxing from friends, I decided to attend the Yoga Loft’s 200 HR yoga teacher training with Vito and Larisa.  It was an amazing experience that brought my understanding of  both myself, and my practice, to a whole new level. I gained so many wonderful friendships during that time.  I’m so thankful that I stepped outside of my comfort zone and did this for myself!
